About Us
Paul McGrath Construction is a long-term Territory business based in Darwin and specialising in renovations and new developments both residential and commercial.
The company is broadly recognised for its professionalism and understanding of the changing environment in the Territory, which impacts on new buildings and renovations.
The director of the company, Paul McGrath, has worked as a builder with his own construction company in Darwin for more than 20 years.
In recognition of its success and versatility, the company has been nominated and successful for both Master Builders and Housing Industry Association Awards.
During this period, Paul has seen Darwin grow and change.
He says that he often reflects on his arrival 20 years ago when the old Territory-style homes were still in vogue.
“Renovations often started with a new deck and, in time, houses expanded with a range of creative designs specifically structured to meet the unique Territory climate.
“In recent times the design and structure of properties have evolved to a state-of-the-art level with buildings that boast some of the most inspirational home designs in Australia.”
Paul says that to be successful in the Top End, local knowledge, broad networking and an affable personality are essential.
“Most importantly, the ability to promote and maintain strong networks and partnerships across all components of the building sector is vital in preparing for and delivering the new building or renovation.”
He says success comes from clear communication at the initial project development stage through to completion.
“This ensures a commitment to a strong rapport with clients and is most effective when expectations and modifications are carefully communicated to all stakeholders, including subcontractors, who understand their individual responsibilities and their role within the McGrath team.”
Paul acknowledges that the uniqueness of the Top End in both an environmental and climatic context impacts on the design of projects necessitating innovation and creativity in project development.
He recognises that to meet client requirements he needs to keep abreast of building trends and new initiatives locally, nationally and internationally.
Paul commits time to research best practice design and fit out, which enhances his business acumen and offers broader options or Territory clients.
He is always mindful of new people moving to Darwin and endeavouring to redesign a house that meets their needs and retains the individuality of Darwin, but most importantly is structured to withstand the huge seasonal changes in the Top End.
The McGrath family includes Paul’s wife, Vicky-Lee, who works in maternity at Darwin Private Hospital, and three children all born in Darwin.
“Darwin and its residents have taught me so much and made our family welcome,” he says. “This our home.”
