Ours was a humble beginning. Paul (‘Pud’ to most who know him) started out as McGrath’s Building Services in 1997 – a one-man handyman band doing modest verandahs, maintenance work and generally small-time jobs. Paul’s wife Vicky-Lee, a midwife at Darwin’s private hospital, kept the family fed at that stage.
But as word of Paul’s work spread around Darwin, verandahs gradually became whole houses, major renovations and industrial-grade workshops, and with a team of tradies on board, we became a company in 2005.
Today, our permanent crew numbers six – highly skilled tradesmen who strive for perfection on every job. They’re also a hard working lot – we’re usually on the tools by 7.30 and work til 5 – but since Paul is known as much for getting jobs finished quickly as he is for top-shelf workmanship, it’s no coincidence. We bribe them with heli-fishing trips and the occasional Friday afternoon carton though, so they don’t complain too loudly.
Our extended team of subcontractors – plumbers, plasterers, painters, electricians, glaziers, tilers and concreters – is the same we use for most jobs. We know they’re reliable and work to our high standard, something Paul guarantees as project manager.
You’ll see our stamp on homes all over Darwin; most clients tell us they can pick a Paul McGrath renovation from the rest. We’re honoured our flair for tropical renovations and construction workmanship has been recognised by both the Master Builders and Housing Industry associations, with five major category awards in the last couple of years.
